What to bring for an FFL transfer

Your checklist for picking up a gun bought online or from a private seller: ID, the Form 4473, the background check, age rules, and timing.

When you buy a gun online or from someone out of state, it has to be shipped to a federally licensed dealer (an FFL) instead of to your home. The dealer then completes the same federal steps as any gun sale before handing it to you. Here's what to have ready so pickup takes minutes, not an afternoon.

Before the gun ships

  • Pick your FFL at checkout. Give the seller our details from the FFL Transfers page.
  • Check the seller has our license. Many sellers need a copy of our FFL on file; we'll email it to them on request.
  • Make sure the gun is legal for you to own in Georgia and that you meet the age rule below.

What to bring at pickup

  • A valid government-issued photo ID showing your name, date of birth, and current address. A Georgia driver's license or ID card is ideal. If the address on your ID isn't current, bring an official document that shows it, such as a vehicle registration or tax bill, and call ahead to check.
  • Your order number or the seller's name, so we can match the package to you.
  • Your Georgia Weapons Carry License, if you have one. Some carry licenses can be used in place of the background check, as ATF allows.
  • Payment for the transfer fee.

At the counter

  1. You fill out ATF Form 4473, the federal firearms transaction record. Answer every question truthfully and completely.
  2. We run the NICS background check, unless a qualifying permit applies.
  3. Once you're approved, you pay the fee and take the gun home.

Age rules

Federal law requires you to be 21 or older for a handgun and 18 or older for a rifle or shotgun when buying from or through a dealer.

If the check is delayed or denied

A delay means NICS needs more time to review. We'll call you when we have an answer. A denial means we can't legally hand over the firearm; we'll talk through returning it to the seller. If you believe a denial is a mistake, you can appeal through the FBI.
